Region 5A brutal for local contenders + predictions
by Jamaar Hawkins, i64sports
Here is our look at this week's high school football postseason matchups, beginning with Class 5 Region A:
Class 5 Region A first round
#8 Cox at #1 Salem (Vb), 7:00pm
This matchup will actually be a rematch of the regular season finale for both teams. The Sundevils won that contest 28-3. There is nothing to suggest Friday's playoff game will go any different. Salem's defense has been phenomenal this season, allowing just 22 points over the course of the regular season. Only one opponent has reached double digits against the Sundevils. Running back Kaelon Black is the main threat when the Sundevils have the ball. Sophomore quarterback Saquan Miles can beat you through the air or with his legs. Cox snuck into the playoffs just narrowly beating out Gloucester for the final spot in Region 5A. Facing Salem on consecutive weeks will provide some form of familiarity but it probably won't help much this time around.
#7 Deep Creek at #2 Maury, 7:00pm
The second-seeded Commodores went unscathed through Eastern District play winning their first outright district title. Maury's offense is the definition of explosive, averaging 48 ppg. The Commodores have surpassed 50 points on five occasions. Penn State commit KeAndre Lambert garners the national attention, but Maury has an assortment of skill players on the offensive end. Running back CJ Beasley is a home run threat on every carry. Seniors Dashaun Peele and Ty Granger round up the Commodores stockpile of talent at the wide receiver position. Deep Creek will likely try to slow the game down with a heavy dose of running back Antoine Flora.
#6 Nansemond River at #3 Indian River, 7:00pm
Two teams that could play their way into a region championship apperance. Nansemond River is coming off an impressive victory against Deep Creek in the regular season finale. Running back Xzavion Evans leads the Warrior offense, compiling 244 rushing yards and five touchdowns in the win over Deep Creek. Indian River won the regular season matchup 40-20 but you can throw out seeding in this one. Keep an eye on Indian River wide receiver Lamareon James, one of the top play makers in Hampton Roads. This should be thrilling match up.
#5 Woodside at #4 Princess Anne, 7:00pm
Princess Anne clinched a home playoff game for the first time since 2017 thanks to a 8-2 regular season record. The Cavaliers feature one of the top prospects in the country, defensive back Tony Grimes. Woodside had an impressive run through the Peninsula District, falling just once to eventual champion Phoebus. The Wolverines held their first six district opponents scoreless before the Phantoms' 21-point scoring output.

Braves-Hornets clash in Southeastern District matchup
by Jamaar Hawkins, i64sports
Unbeaten Deep Creek will face its toughest matchup of the year on Friday night when Indian River plays host to its Southeastern District rival. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm at Indian River High School.
Indian River has suffered a pair of losses already this season, but a win over Deep Creek tonight would be a nice confidence booster as the Braves head into the later part of the regular season. Senior wide receiver Lamareon James is one of the top offensive weapons in the Hampton Roads area. The senior has 371 receiving yards and five touchdowns on the season.
Deep Creek is coming off a 42-0 win over Western Branch. Running back Antoine Flora leads a strong offensive attack for the Hornets, who average more than 40 ppg. Flora is less than 200 rushing yards from eclipsing the 1,000-yard plateau. Quarterback Jayden Bailey is currently seventh in Hampton Roads with 952 passing yards. Indian River sophomore Zakai Minggia trails Bailey with 836 yards. The Hornets kickoff a brutal final month of the season with Oscar Smith, Kings Fork and Nansemond River left on the regular season slate.
Prediction: Indian River 20, Deep Creek 13
